A teen uncovers a strange conspiracy at an exclusive Italian ballet school in this debut novel blending gothic horror, science fiction, and romance.
"A dark adventure, stunningly written!" —Jay Asher, author of #1 New York Times bestseller Thirteen Reasons Why
Seventeen-year-old Penny is a lead dancer at the Grande Teatro, a finishing school where she and eleven other young women are training to become the finest ballerinas in Italy. Tucked deep in the woods, the school is overseen by the mysterious and handsome young Master, who keeps the girls ensconced in the estate—and in the only life Penny has ever known.
When flashes of memories—memories of a life very different from the one she thinks she's been leading—start to appear, Penny begins to question the Grande Teatro and the motivations of Master. With a kind and attractive kitchen boy, Cricket, at her side, Penny vows to escape the confines of her school and the strict rules that dictate every step she takes. But at every turn, Master finds a way to stop her, and Penny must uncover the secrets of her past before it's too late.
"Deliciously dark and twisty, taking you on a luscious ride." —Suzanne Lazear, author of the Aether Chronicles series

Gr 9 Up-Mixing elements of gothic horror, science fiction, and romance, this debut YA novel falls disappointingly short on several levels. Penny is one of 12 teenaged girls being trained in ballet at a remote school in Italy. It is owned by a dark and handsome young man known only as Master, to whom all the girls are attracted and want desperately to please. Except Penny, who has recently begun to feel uncomfortable in his presence, and to notice that all her fellow sorellas, though unrelated, share disturbingly similar traits and memories. Penny's increasing flashes of memory from a very different life result in crippling migraines, unconsciousness, followed by bitter medicine, and a period of contentment. But the treatments are losing their effectiveness. Sensitive to any errant behavior in his girls, Master is particularly aware of Penny's growing confusion. He attempts to bring her back into the fold with a new "treatment," but his plans are foiled by the kitchen boy. Cricket, who is actually Master's nephew, knows what's going on and warns Penny in hopes of convincing her to escape. She refuses to leave while her sorellas are still in danger. She must first find a way to free them from Master's control. Katz's debut novel provides a satisfyingly dark and frightening plot, but its sci-fi elements are dubious at best, and its romance feels gratuitous. Considering its intended audience, the pervasive Stockholm Syndrome sensuality and implications are not explored thoroughly. VERDICT Despite its intriguing story line, notable shortcomings should be considered before purchasing.-Cary Frostick, formerly at Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VA

At an isolated Italian estate, seventeen-year-old Penny attends finishing school and dances ballet with eleven other young women who are all devoted to their benefactor, Master. But when Penny discovers Master has tampered with their memories, she must save herself and the others. Penny is a resilient heroine, and the isolated school, doll-like pupils, and Master's controlling character create a perfectly creepy atmosphere.
