Narrator Helen Keeley follows the journey of 15-year old Tobias as he makes the transition from novitiate to walker in the sovereign's court of Daerjen. At the behest of the sovereign, walkers travel back in time at a cost of one year off their lives for each year they travel back and forth. Keeley makes subtle changes in Tobias's voice to account for his aging 14 years during his first journey. She is equally adept with characters who become 14 years younger. Tobias's mission is fraught with danger, and Keeley cultivates empathy for him. An engaging storyteller, she allows the pace of the story to dictate her delivery. This audiobook is the first of a trilogy called the Islevale Cycle. J.E.M. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award, 2020 Audies Finalist © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine
