Delsie knew it wasn't a good idea to dare her best friend Todd to explore the abandoned houses by the old mill. But she couldn't back down after the words slipped out of her mouth. Together the two friends bike to the mill and try the door of each abandoned house. They are all locked . . . except one. Delsie and Todd sneak inside and discover two strange things. Someone is living there. And something doesn't want Delsie to leave. It's a dog, a strange golden dog, that only Delsie can see!
Newbery Honor-winning author Marion Dane Bauer spins a fourth spooky tale to complement her previous stories, The Blue Ghost, The Red Ghost, and The Green Ghost.

Gr 2-3-Bauer takes readers on an exciting fantasy mystery. Friends Delsie and Todd are bored over Labor Day weekend until they sneak inside an empty house and discover that something strange is going on. As the plot unravels, Delsie, who has always wanted a dog, feels and eventually sees a canine ghost. From that point on, readers will be kept on the edge of their seats. Ferguson's charcoal illustrations bring an old-fashioned charm to this easy chapter book.-Nancy Mackenzie, Ithan Elementary School Library, Bryn Mawr, PA

Grades 2-4 Soon-to-be-fourth-grader Delsie longs for a dog and doesnt believe in ghosts. Then, while exploring a long-abandoned house with her friend Todd, she feels the touch of unseen soft fur, and as whats invisible becomes visible, she starts wondering if ghosts, specifically ghost dogs, do exist. The fourth book in Bauers series that began with The Blue Ghost (2005) intersperses Delsies story with that of the ghost dog and her past companion, a bristly homeless man who grieves the dogs passing. Accessible and absorbing, this shivery title, illustrated with the occasional sensitive drawing, ably combines supernatural mystery and a sympathetic story of loss and connection.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
