She has a to-do list a mile long and falling for her coworker isn't on it—yet somehow he’s become her top priority in this romantic comedy from the national bestselling author of Love in the Time of Serial Killers.

Lauren Fox is the bookkeeper for Cold World, a tourist destination that's always a winter wonderland despite being located in humid Orlando, Florida. Sure, it’s ranked way below any of the trademarked amusement parks and maybe foot traffic could be better. But it’s a fun place to work, even if “fun” isn’t exactly Lauren’s middle name.
Her coworker Asa Williamson, on the other hand, is all about finding ways to enliven his days at Cold World—whether that means organizing the Secret Santa or teasing Lauren. When the owner asks Lauren and Asa to propose something (anything, really) to raise more revenue, their rivalry heats up as they compete to come up with the best idea. But the situation is more dire than they thought, and it might take these polar opposites working together to save the day. If Asa thought Lauren didn't know how to enjoy herself, he's surprised by how much he enjoys spending time together. And if Lauren thought Asa wasn't serious about anything, she's surprised by how seriously he seems to take her
As Lauren and Asa work to save their beloved wintery spot, they realize the real attraction might be the heat generating between them.

With this swoony enemies-to-lovers rom-com, Thompson (Love in the Time of Serial Killers) gets in well ahead of the annual slew of Christmas romances, taking readers to Florida’s Cold World amusement park, where the winter holidays are celebrated year-round. Reserved park bookkeeper Lauren Fox, however, does not allow herself to enjoy the festive vibes. The nerdy former foster child protects herself by keeping her walls, and her guard, up. Her easygoing coworker Asa Williamson is determined to get her out of her shell, but his misguided method consists mostly of pulling her pigtails, or, as Lauren sees it, antagonizing her. When their boss asks for pitches on how to revitalize the financially struggling park, the duo develop an intense rivalry—until it becomes clear that, to save Cold World, they’ll have to work together. Over Christmas karaoke and eggnog overloads—and one memorable night trapped in the park together until morning—the pair learn they have more in common than they thought, including a drive to advocate for those whose voices have been silenced. Thompson does a fantastic job with the relationship progression, making each step forward utterly believable. This will have readers dreaming of sugarplums at any time of year. Narrator Lindsey Dorcus takes listeners to the winter wonderland tourist destination of Cold World, which, ironically, is located in hot and muggy Orlando, Florida. Lauren Fox, a bookkeeper for Cold World, and Asa Williamson, a dedicated, longtime employee, have each been assigned to create a new business plan to generate more revenue for the frosty theme park. The result is a tension-filled rivalry. Dorcus beautifully maneuvers her way through this well-crafted third-person narrative, performing both Lauren's and Asa's chapters. The distinct nuances and inflections of her character voices make for a delightful, heartfelt performance. Listeners will be happy when the pair put aside their heated rivalry to save Cold World and evolve into an opposites-attract couple. J.J.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Opposites attract in Thompson's (Love in the Time of Serial Killers) latest contemporary romance, ably narrated by Lindsay Dorcus. Asa Williamson and Lauren Fox, coworkers at Cold World, a winter-themed attraction in sunny Orlando, FL, have antagonized each other over the entire year they've worked together. However, with both working on a project to revitalize their workplace's popularity and having friends in common, the two find themselves spending more time together. After a night locked inside Cold World, their animosity sparks into something more. With only one narrator, listeners may be surprised by the novel's alternating points of view. Dorcus expressively performs both protagonists' chapters, using inflections to capture the duo's strong emotional reactions as their animosity evolves into attraction. Unique character voices make it easy to differentiate between speakers. She keeps listeners engaged, although some may still feel that the spark between the couple is missing. VERDICT Although Dorcus offers a pleasant performance, this isn't enough to make this audio an essential purchase. Best where Thompson's titles are in high demand or where contemporary romances fly off the shelves.--Amanda L. S. Murphy
