Laurel Grant is playing house for the holidays—complete with a fake husband and kids—in this delightful, charming rom-com by Kerry Winfrey.
Laurel Grant works as the social media manager for Buckeye State of Mind, an Ohio tourism magazine and website. She most definitely does not run a farm . . . but one tiny misunderstanding leads her boss, Gilbert, to think she owns her twin sister Holly’s farm just outside of Columbus. Laurel only handles the social media for the farm, but she’s happy to keep her little white lie going if it means not getting fired—she cannot be jobless again.
And keep it going she must when Gilbert, recently dumped by his wife, invites himself over for the farm’s big Christmas Eve Eve dinner (as advertised on Meadow Rise Farm’s Instagram, thanks to Laurel herself). Laurel immediately goes into panic mode to figure out how she can trick Gilbert into thinking she’s basically the Martha Stewart of rural Ohio and keep her job in the process.
Laurel and Holly come up with the perfect plan—all Laurel has to do is pretend to own the farm for one dinner. But Laurel shows up at the farm to find an unwelcome guest is waiting: Max Beckett, her nemesis since Holly’s wedding. The annoyingly attractive man she hates will be posing as Laurel’s husband just for the evening, but when a snowstorm traps them all for the entire weekend, Laurel is going to have to figure out how to survive with her job and dignity intact. Whatever the case, this promises to be the most eventful Christmas in ages. . . .

With a keen eye for both the wacky and the wonderful, Winfrey (Just Another Love Song) rings in the holidays with a clever comedy of errors. Laurel Grant falls into a dream job at an Ohio tourism magazine, where she writes a monthly column about her “simple, hardworking, sometimes chaotic life on the farm” with her husband and kids. There’s just one problem: it’s not her own life she’s writing about, but that of her much more together twin sister, Holly. So when her boss announces his desire to see the farm and invites himself over for the family’s annual Christmas Eve Eve feast, Laurel’s in a pickle. Luckily, Holly’s ready and willing to help Laurel pretend to be the lady of the manor, even recruiting her husband’s best friend, Max, to pose as Laurel’s husband. Complicating the charade is the fact that Laurel hates Max with a passion—and when a blizzard strands all at the farm, they have to pretend to be in love all the way through Christmas. It’s enough time, in fact, for the ice between Laurel and Max to melt and tender feelings to arise. The sweet romance blooms organically amid the chaos and Winfrey uses it as a vehicle to touch on deeper themes of loneliness and self-esteem. The results are utterly adorable. Agent: Stephen Barbara, InkWell Management.

Laurel may be a Christmas fanatic, but she is definitely on the naughty list. After her boss mistakenly assumed that she owns the farm for which she handles social media, she may have omitted the fact that it's actually her twin sister who's the dependable, domestic one. When that same boss gets dumped just before the holidays, Laurel inadvertently invites him to share the farmhouse festivities with her imaginary husband and kids. Leaning in, Laurel enlists her niece, nephew, and nemesis to create an old-fashioned fake-family celebration. Can she go from burning microwaved mac and cheese to Martha Stewart, or will her white lie ruin everyone's white Christmas? Winfrey (Just Another Love Song) crafts an intricate, amusing contemporary rom-com. The heat level is kissing-only, and the quirky characters are authentic and adorable. Narrator Jennifer Jill Araya gives an expressive portrayal of the likable leading lady. Paired with rich detail and witty dialogue, her presentation yields an enjoyable experience that will leave listeners smiling. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking sweet holiday hijinks with a playful Parent Trap twist. Recommended for fans of Jennifer Crusie, Lynn Painter, and Sarah Adams. --Lauren Hackert
