Lackey presents the latest Valdemar anthology as both editor and author, exploring this well-known fantasy setting through the eyes of ordinary people who are thrust into unusual circumstances. The protagonists range from Haven's constables and urchins to a beekeeper, a stable hand, and even retired and active Heralds facing situations that are primarily local issues rather than world-shaping events. A variety of writers teamed up in this anthology, exploring Valdemar in mundane ways: in Kristin Schwengel's ""In Memory's Vault,"" a cook helps to restore an injured messenger's memory with familiar food, while in Dylan Birtolo's ""Suffering Knows No Borders,"" a Healer endures disdain from his own soldiers to tend to captured enemies. Several of the protagonists work through variations of imposter syndrome, including Lackey's own Herald Tadeus in "Anything, with Nothing," as he muses on his lack of magic while defending a town, building on knowledge gained as a former member of Haven's City Watch. This engaging anthology will appeal to long-time Valdemar fans and new readers, showcasing every person's ability to become a hero when presented with an underlying need.
